The USS Rhode Island launched on 7 January 2020 and officially commissioned on 31 October 2020 in Middletown, RI.
Potential members of the USS Rhode Island must first join STARFLEET, and then tat that time can be assigned to the USS Rhode Island.
Membership to the USS Rhode Island is free and open to any STARFLEET, Int. member in good standing.
The USS Rhode Island conducts its business in two ways, monthly meetings when possible and by correspondence via the internet (such as email, Facebook, online meeting chats etc.)
For over 40 years, STARFLEET has provided Star Trek fans a way to meet each other, make friends, have fun, give back to their communities, and show that the dream of Gene Roddenberry can live long and prosper. On the local level, members can gather with other fans for a variety of enjoyable activities. On the international level, STARFLEET offers our members a wealth of resources that you won’t find in any other Star Trek fan clubs. In addition to a great set of membership materials and our regularly-electronic newsletter, STARFLEET offers members the chance to get involved with STARFLEET Academy, the STARFLEET Marine Corps, TF31 MACO, STARFLEET Medical, Pet Fleet, and much, much more. We even have a group of academic monetary scholarships that are awarded to deserving STARFLEET members each year.
STARFLEET Chapters are grouped into Regions, each Region covering a different geographical area. These regions will often hold gatherings where crews of many Chapters get together for conferences, parties, charity events, and a whole range of other activities.
STARFLEET is divided into hundreds of local Chapters, each named as a different starship or space station. Chapters are where the members of STARFLEET get together locally to make friends, meet, and have a fun time. Our many Chapters are spread out across the United States and also in foreign countries all over the world.
STARFLEET Chapters range in size from 10 members to several dozen. Some get together and meet in person while others are correspondence Chapters where members who live far away from each other can still exchange messages via e-mail, telephone, and even good, old-fashioned postal mail.
The chapter formed in January 2020 and the fictional timeline of the chapter was originally set in the Trek calendar year of 2383. To help you understand the time line, The Star Trek: Voyager series ended in the Trek calendar of 2378; Star Trek: Nemesis movie was set in the Trek calendar year of 2379.
Originally inspired by “Star Trek”, the USS Rhode Island is a science fiction and fantasy fan club that embraces everything from Captain James Kirk to Doctor Who. The USS Rhode Island also participates in many events that includes, but is not limited to: Cookouts, movies, parties or celebrations, trips to local tourist attractions, and Sci-Fi conventions.

Membership to the USS Rhode Island is open to any STARFLEET, Int. member in good standing, although the USS Rhode Island is classified as a correspondence chapter so we use several communications mediums to keep in touch and reach the membership base. At present we use the old standards of land-mail and telephone tree, as well as the Internet such as: email, listserv, Facebook, messaging and video conferencing.
Each member of the USS Rhode Island is entitled to and will receive the following in an electronic format:
- ID Card (chapter)
- Membership Handbook
- 6 issues of the bi-monthly newsletter called “OCEAN STATE JOURNAL”
- Promotion Certificates as earned
- Award Certificates as earned
- Membership Certificate
We’re also dedicated to making the world a better place. Not all members participate in our community service projects. To understand further, let’s beam down for a moment to Afghanistan, where U.S. soldiers have received care packages from USS Rhode Island members. Here in Rhode Island, we’ve collected Labels for Education and during the holidays we collect donations for the areas Toys for Tots campaign and the Angel Tree Project. We’ve also participated in food can drives and recycling.
That’s just an example of how our community service is actually global service and because of our efforts to embrace the ideals of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, we’re doing our part to meet his vision of a better world.
To see what we do, check out our newsletter, “OCEAN STATE JOURNAL”.
